Yesterday (Monday 8th March 2021) saw fifty-six bowlers from various local and metropolitan clubs play in mid conditions at the Qube Logistics Gala Day.  Prize money of $2000 was kindly provided by our long-standing sponsor, Qube Logistics.  Also included were wines from Sidewood Wines Estate which added to the occasion.

Games of 2 x 12 ends for fours and 2 x 8 ends of three bowls pairs saw the team from Victor Harbour BC of Ken Mableson, Ken Waller, Brenton Speed, and our own Roger Mableson, take out the major prize.  Ken Mableson, Roger’s brother, told the audience it was the first time they had played together and looked forward to many more.  The mixed team from Oakbank and Gumeracha were second with the Blackwood rink third.

Early morning “toasties” were provided before the games followed by lunch consisting of meatballs, pasta, and salads, with tiramisu, strawberries, and icecream and completed with afternoon tea of cheese, condiments, and biscuits. During the lunches, twelve lucky bowlers received a shopping bag full of handouts from Qube Logistics as spot prizes.

We sincerely thank Qube Logistics for their generosity in making this day possible and such a success.

The winning rink of (L-R): Brenton Speed, Roger Mableson, Ken Waller and Ken Mableson with Club President, Chris Button.

First Aid Course Successful

Members and family attended our First Aid Course last Friday and it proved to be a great success.  Conducted by St John Ambulance, twelve attendees varied from new first aiders to ones those who had gained their qualification many years ago.  Our educator, Linda, made the day entertaining whilst making sure we grasped the information.  Role Plays created some innovation with half the class sent outside with the other half required to play-act being struck down with an acute asthma attack and falling over and broken their arm.  The reverse role play was that the person had had a stroke and also broken their arm.

Role players were given bonus points if they acted out their particular role with many taking the role a little too far-fetched.

Many were asked to play a part, but Jeff Thomspon took things a little too far when being bitten by a snake.  So much so the Linda was encouraged by all that not only should his arm be immobilised, but the rest for him. The pictures tell the story:

We not only were required to go through a range of practical assessment tasks but complete a theory multi-choice assessment as well.   All attendees completed the course and were assessed as competent.

Great for the Club, members, and wider community.

Hutchinson’s At It Again!!

Last Friday night, Sue and Rob Hutchinson represented our Club in the Singles Champion of Champions.  Played at Uraidla BC in cool and calm conditions both won their respective matches.  Both matches were played in great spirit and very competitive right throughout.

They were fortunate to go through to the next round (semi-finals) without playing another round, also to be played at Uraidla BC from 5.30pm (TBC) next Friday evening.  Win, and they are into the Grand Final!!

Members are invited to attend and support our “Hutchinsons”.

Div 1 Great Win – one not so lucky!!

Saturday’s Top Division had a great win overcoming a strong Mt Barker team 76 – 56 shots at Gumeracha BC.  Jamie Burt’s rink of Tim Anderson, Roger Mableson, and Rob Hutchinson gave the team an enormous boost winning 32- 7 whilst Geoff Deeble’s rink of Sue Hutchinson, Chris Rowe, and Phil Nagel fought out a 21 all draw.  Rick Babidge’s rink of Richard Crocker, Barry Rimmer, and Sue Maddern fought out a close game going down by 5 shots.  The third to last end saw Rick draw the shot with his last bowl to see his opponent, Brenton Smith run at the head and converted to six shots up.  Just one bowl!!

Next week the team will take on Woodside at Mt Barker and we wish them all the best.

Wednesday’s Top Division had a disappointing loss to Lobethal at Oakbank BC. Whilst all three rinks went down, the scores were no indication of the overall performance.  Next week they take on Mt Barker at Woodside BC.

Again, we wish them all the best.

If you have a spare afternoon the teams would appreciate your support.

Two In – others so close!!!

It would be fair to say that this season has been a great success and one the Club can be proud of.  Fielding four teams on Saturdays and two on Wednesdays was always going to be a stretch but, except for a few weeks, we have been able to provide all our members with a game.  Well done to the selectors on their efforts.

This week we have our Wednesday Top Division playing Lobethal at Oakbank, after finishing second.  On Saturday, our Top Division is playing Mt Barker at Gumeracha.  They finished fourth.  Well done to all bowlers and best of luck.  If you have a free afternoon the bowlers would appreciate your support.

Our Wednesday Second Division team finished just outside the four in fifth place.  Sadly our Saturday Second Division team narrowly missed the finals on percentage, also finishing fifth.  Our two Third Division sides finished seventh (gold team) and fifth (silver team) respectively.  The silver team also had a chance of making the finals over the last two weeks.

What a great effort by every member!!  Congratulations.

Don’t forget the Club events need to be finished prior to the EOS Presentation Dinner so please organise asap.

Teams boost finals chances!!

Saturday wins over strong Woodside teams boosted our Top and Second Division team’s chances of playing finals.  The top division stayed in fourth spot whilst the Second division jumped into third position.   With one round to go against Gumeracha, wins will consolidate our finals asperations.

Jamie Burt had a great win being up by 20 shots over Woodside’s Brett Norman, Geoff Deeble had a fight but drew with Peter “mango” Mangelscorf, with Rick Babidge closing the midterm gap to within six shots to Andrew Alberd.

In the second division the lead changed hands throughout the day with Woodside getting on top only to see our rinks fight back.  At the close of play, all our rinks had won their games.  Val Deeble led to way with a six-shot win over highly fancied Alex Reynolds, Jeff Thompson won by five shots over Gavin Alberd and Dave Grego, after the lead change three times in the final six ends, won by two shots.

Well done to all.

New Men’s Pairs Champions

Former pairs champions, Bob Edwards and Ray Rattray, today (Wednesday) took on up-and-coming pair, Chris Button and Richard Crocker in stifling heat for the Fairley’s Shoex Men’s Pairs Chamionship.  Button and Crocker got away to a 9-3 lead by the sixth end, only to see their lead eroded with the scores level at 11 apiece at the completion of the twelfth end.  However, they steadied winning the last three ends getting home 16-11.

Congratulations to Chris and Richard and to Bob and Ray for the manner in which the game was played.
