Close matches and an 8

Division one bowlers were all smiles at the end of a hard fought day with all rinks up against Mt Barker under the Dome.

Phil Nagel’s team shot out early to have an 11 – 2 lead over the highly fancied John Corner.  However, Corner’s team fought back and were leading until they dropped the 8!  The remainder of the game was always close but our rink closed it out with a 3 shot win.
Bill Fairley’s bowlers were denied on many occasions by ‘Trap’ Daw, who more than once managed to steal the end. After 13 ends the Mt Barker rink had a 10-6 lead going into afternoon tea.  Fuelled with freshly cut sandwiches and cake, Bill’s team slowly fought their way back.  A timely trail of the jack by the skipper enabled Hahndorf to score a four, break clear and go on to win by six shots.
Christine Keller’s rink was also engaged in a struggle for shots and after 11 ends the rink was down 10-8. However, Hahndorf gained a small lead of 4 shots which kept them just ahead until the 24th end when scores were level. The last end went our way to end two shots up, 21-19.

Congratulations to Phil Nagel’s rink on their “8”.

Division two met the undefeated Mt Barker and lost by four shots in an enthralling battle.  Carolyne Edwardes rink combined well for an eleven shot win.  However after both Bill Robertson and Michael Wheals’ rinks started well and led early, both went down during the middle stages but came back to reduce the scores in the final ends.

Division four, top of the ladder, continued on its winning way accounting for second team Lobethal at Woodside by three shots.  Allen McMahon’s rink won by seven shots whilst Tom Hennessey lost be three shots in a very close encounter.
