Club weekend at Waikerie

A great couple of days had by all. Waikerie hospitality was fantastic with mixed teams bowls Friday afternoon and dinner at the Waikerie Hotel. Saturday approx 32 bowlers again in the afternoon and a great BBQ organised by Waikerie club in the evening. A meat raffle was thrown in for fun and won by a Hahndorf newcomer, Maria. Friday was cold and wet but it did not matter as we were playing under the dome. Many thanks to Jenny, Wayne and Glen for organising the Waikerie end and many thanks to Val for organizing the Hahndorf crew. We came to Waikerie and were greeted with a handshake and after two days left with a lot of hugs.

An amazing combination of bowls, fellowship and camaraderie. We shall endeavour to have Waikerie come to Hahndorf and we will be back at Waikerie next year.

BPL cup at Mt Barker

Sunday 7th of August saw a round of the BPL cup hosted under the Dome at Mt Barker, 12 teams entered, with 3 winners going forward to the state final in September. The format is 2 bowl triples with a game consisting of two 5 end sets.  It is designed to be fast-paced, with no jack rolling and restrictions on player movement.

Hahndorf players Sue Hutchinson, Rob Hutchinson, and Geoff Deeble entered and so represented our club. They had success winning all 3 games, two of the games, against teams from Strathalbyn and Blackwood by the barest of margins, 1 shot up in a tie-breaker. The last game against Lobethal was a 2-set win but was still very close.

So they advance to the state final in September to be played at Torrensville.

Well Done Team.

Golf Day Fun

Sunday 27th of Feb saw 24 HBC members descend upon the Oakbank golf course to demonstrate the diverse sporting skills we suspected they all had.

This day was suggested by Jamie as a day of fun and team building, and it achieved both outcomes. We had Shelly tootling around in a “gator” dispensing refreshments, we had Tali towing a cart full of twins, we had some very good golfers teamed up with some good bowlers, and we had a lot of fun.

When it was over a BBQ, which the versatile Shelly had cooked, then the presentation of prizes followed. Lucky winners of the day Pat Wakefield, Rob Hutch, Gail Vort-Ronald, and Geoff Deeble will have their names on the Trophy, donated by Bill Robertson.

We hope this becomes an annual day of fun.

Well done to the participants, helpers and organisers. I am sure the golf course will recover.

Club Champions decided

The Club Champions have been decided.

Last Sunday, on a humid showery day 3 finals were played. We havent any photos as the conditions were so poor.

Ladies Club Champion, Sue Maddern. Sue defeated the “other Sue”  last years Champ, and HBA Champ of Champs, Sue Hutchinson, in a fairly close game.

Mens Club Champion, Glen McGough. Glen defeated Phil Nagel in a game that was very tight until they had a break due to showers, after which Glen skipped away.

Mens pairs Champions, Graham Evans and Tim Anderson. G and T beat Rick Babidge and Geoff Deeble reasonably comfortably, handling the conditions and the shower breaks better.

Ladies pairs Champions, Sue Maddern and Sue Hutchinson. Game played on Thursday in lovely conditions. The 2 Sues defeated Val Deeble and Shelly Howe, this game was a thriller, very close until the second last end when the Sues scored a deflating mutiple.

Well done to all players and good luck in the Champ of Champ events.

State Pairs Finalists

Last Sunday two teams with Hahndorf players played in the finals of the state pairs.

Phil Nagel and Bob Edwards were in the last 16 and went down valiantly 16-11, a fantastic effort.

Sue Hutchinson playing with her sister got through to the final 8, where they lost 14-9 to the eventual runner-up. Again a fantastic effort.

Well done!
